Surya Kumar Yadav has smashed records that stood for 17 years by Sanath Jayasuriya and 15 years by Sachin Tendulkar.

The Mumbai Indians star has been unstoppable this IPL season. Against Punjab Kings, Surya Kumar delivered a stormy innings, breaking two major records along the way.

On Monday in Jaipur, the 34-year-old struck 57 runs off just 39 balls, including 2 sixes and 6 fours.

He now holds the record for the most runs scored by a Mumbai Indians player in a single IPL season, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing mark of 618 runs in 15 innings back in 2010.

This season, Surya Kumar has scored 640 runs in 14 innings. He is the first Mumbai Indians player to score over 600 runs in two different IPL seasons — in 2023, he scored 605 runs in 16 innings.

Surya Kumar also now holds the Mumbai Indians record for the most sixes in a single IPL season. Before this match, he shared the record with Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya, who hit 31 sixes in the inaugural 2008 season.

This season, Surya Kumar has smashed 33 sixes.

Remarkably, he has scored at least 25 runs in all 14 innings this season, setting a record for the most consecutive T20 innings with 25+ runs. This breaks South African Temba Bavuma’s previous record of 13 innings.

Despite Surya Kumar’s record-breaking performance, Mumbai Indians couldn’t secure a win. Punjab defeated the five-time IPL champions by 7 wickets, confirming their spot in the top two. Shreyas Iyer’s side will now have two chances to reach the final.

Josh Inglis played a key role for Punjab, scoring 73 runs off 42 balls with 3 sixes and 9 fours, while opener Priyansh Arya contributed 62 runs off 35 balls with 2 sixes and 9 fours. Punjab chased down the target of 185 with 9 balls to spare.
