Jamie Overton’s return to international cricket took an unfortunate turn as the English pacer suffered a finger injury during the first ODI against West Indies, ruling him out of the remainder of the series—including the upcoming T20Is.
The injury occurred at Edgbaston on Thursday while Overton was bowling. On just his second delivery, he attempted to take a return catch off West Indies batter Keacy Carty and injured his little finger in the process.
Overton, 31, immediately left the field, with teammate Jacob Bethell completing his over. Despite the pain, Overton later returned and bowled brilliantly—picking up 3 wickets for just 22 runs in 5.2 overs. However, the damage had already been done.
Initial assessments suggested a dislocated finger, but further scans revealed a fracture. Overton is now under the supervision of England’s medical team as he begins rehabilitation.
England have opted not to name a replacement for Overton in the ODI squad.
Despite the setback, England opened the series on a high note, piling on 400 runs and sealing a massive 238-run win. The second ODI is scheduled for Sunday in Cardiff, followed by the third in The Oval on Tuesday.
The T20I leg of the tour is set to begin next Friday.
