In the 2024 IPL, it was Abhishek Sharma who set a stunning record—most sixes in a single season by an Indian, smashing 42 of them. But as we head into the IPL final, that record is now within striking distance of Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer currently has 39 sixes to his name this season. Given his recent form, hitting four more doesn’t seem out of reach. In the last match alone—the second qualifier against Mumbai Indians—he cleared the ropes eight times. His unbeaten 87 powered Punjab to a successful chase of 203. If Iyer manages just three sixes in the final, he’ll share the record. One more, and it’s all his.

So how has Iyer fared in IPL finals?

The Indian batter has appeared in two finals before. His first was back in 2020 for Delhi Capitals, where he scored an unbeaten 65 off 50 balls against Mumbai Indians. Delhi lost that final by five wickets, but Iyer hit two sixes in that innings.

He returned to the final in 2024, this time with Kolkata Knight Riders. But the match was a low-scoring affair—Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for just 113, and Iyer barely got to bat. He faced only 3 balls and scored 6 runs. Interestingly, Iyer has never been dismissed in an IPL final.

While there’s a realistic chance for Iyer to break the Indian six-hitting record, the overall IPL record is far out of reach. That still belongs to Chris Gayle, who hammered 59 sixes in a single season. Iyer would need 20 more sixes to equal that—an impossible ask in one match.
