Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim rescued Bangladesh from an early collapse to build a massive partnership on Day One of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka.
“Bangladesh posted 292 for 3 at stumps on the opening day of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka.” This match marks the start of a new cycle in the ICC World Test Championship.
Both Shanto and Mushfiqur scored centuries to steer the innings after Bangladesh were reeling at 45 for 3 during the morning session.
“At stumps, Shanto remained unbeaten on 136 off 260 balls, while Mushfiqur was not out on 105 from 186 deliveries.”
Together, they have added “an unbroken stand of 247 runs” for the fourth wicket — Bangladesh’s highest against Sri Lanka in Tests for that position.
Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat at the Galle International Stadium on Tuesday. However, opener Anamul Haque fell for a duck after facing 10 balls.
Sadman Islam and Mominul Haque added 34 runs for the second wicket before debutant spinner “Tharindu Ratnayake removed both in consecutive overs.” Both batters were caught in the slips by Sri Lankan skipper “Dhananjaya de Silva.”
That’s when Shanto and Mushfiqur took charge. They didn’t allow another wicket to fall for the rest of the day.
“Shanto reached his century off 202 balls,” ending a 20-innings drought without a hundred. It was his sixth Test century in his 36th match. During this innings, the 26-year-old also crossed 2,000 runs in Test cricket.
“Mushfiqur brought up his century in 176 balls,” notching up his 12th Test hundred. His last century came against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. In the 13 innings that followed, he couldn’t cross 40 — until now. With this knock, the 38-year-old made a strong return to form.
Despite taking the second new ball, Sri Lanka couldn’t break through in the final 10 overs of the day.
