The Colombo Test wrapped up in less than six overs on the fourth day, marking Bangladesh’s 47th innings defeat in their 25-year Test cricket journey.
“Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in the Colombo Test to clinch the two-match series 1–0.”
The match ended early on Saturday as Bangladesh, resuming on 115 for 6, could add just 18 more runs before being bowled out.
After struggling in the previous three innings of the series, Prabath Jayasuriya bounced back brilliantly, claiming 5 wickets. It was the 12th time in 22 Tests that the left-arm spinner registered a five-wicket haul.
He removed overnight batter Litton Das (14) early in the day and then dismissed Nayeem Hasan in his very next over. Later, he completed his five-wicket haul by taking a return catch off Taijul Islam.
The final wicket of Ebadot Hossain was taken by Tharindu Ratnayake, bringing the game to an end.
As the Bangladesh Cricket Board celebrates 25 years of Test status, this loss marks yet another harsh reminder of the team’s ongoing struggles in red-ball cricket—47 innings defeats now in their Test history.
Up next, the two sides will meet in a three-match ODI series starting Wednesday at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium.
