Prince Masvaure has been brought in as a concussion substitute for Brian Bennett, who was ruled out of the remainder of the first Test.
Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett was forced to withdraw from the rest of the opening Test after being struck on the helmet by a bouncer from South African pacer Kwena Maphaka. As a concussion replacement, Prince Masvaure has been called into the side.
After South Africa declared their first innings at 418 for 9 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe began their reply on Sunday, the second day of the match. However, their innings got off to a shaky start, losing Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Nicholas Welch within the first five overs.
In the final delivery of the sixth over, Bennett attempted to hook a short ball from the young left-arm pacer Maphaka, but it struck him on the helmet. Though he passed the initial concussion test with the help of the physio and continued batting, he only faced three more deliveries in the next over before walking off the field.
At the time, Bennett was batting on 19 runs off 28 balls.
Bennett’s exit is a significant blow for Zimbabwe. In their most recent Test match last month at Trent Bridge against England, he played a superb knock of 139.
The replacement, 36-year-old left-hander Prince Masvaure, last played a Test in July of the previous year.
