In the 1990s, this former spinning all-rounder was an inseparable part of Zimbabwe cricket.
His full name was Mohammed Ahmed Meman, but everyone in Zimbabwe cricket knew him simply as ‘Babu.’ Internationally, he was recognized by that name as well. After a long battle with various illnesses, Zimbabwe cricket has lost one of its most familiar faces.
He had been living in Leicester, England, for many years, where he passed away at the age of 73.
Meman’s international playing career for Zimbabwe was limited to just one match — against India in the 1987 World Cup. However, in domestic cricket, this off-spinning all-rounder was a legend. He also spent many years playing in England’s Minor Counties Championship.
Globally, Meman was best known as the Zimbabwe team manager. From the dawn of Zimbabwe’s Test cricket journey through its growth years, he remained an indispensable figure in the country’s cricket scene. He served as team manager from 1992 to 2006.
Later, he also worked as a national selector.
Zimbabwe Cricket expressed deep condolences on his passing.
“We are deeply grateful to Babu for his long-standing contributions both on and off the field in our country’s cricket. Everyone who had the opportunity to work with him will remember his drive, humility, and dedication with respect. Our heartfelt sympathies go to his wife Aisha, children Iqbal, Fazila, and Sadia, the rest of his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.”
