Tanvir Islam’s five-wicket haul helped Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the second ODI.
With this win, Bangladesh leveled the three-match series at 1-1.
At the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, Bangladesh were all out for 248 in 45.5 overs, while Sri Lanka managed 232.
Making his second ODI appearance, Tanvir Islam was the star for Bangladesh with 5 wickets for just 39 runs in 10 overs.
Winning the toss and batting first, Bangladesh lost opener Tanzid Hasan early for 7 runs in the third over. Parvez Hossain and Nazmul Hossain Shanto then put on a 63-run partnership for the second wicket.
Making his second ODI appearance, Parvez reached his fifty off 46 balls before being bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga’s googly for 67 runs off 69 balls. Shanto had already departed for 14.
Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz could not make much impact, scoring just 9. Returning players Shamim Hossain (22) and Zakir Ali (24) also failed to convert starts into big scores.
At this point, Towhid Hridoy steadied the innings, but he was run out for 51.
From there, Tanzim Hasan took the team close to 250. He remained unbeaten on 33 off just 21 balls with two fours and two sixes, adding 30 runs in the final partnership with Mustafizur Rahman.
Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando claimed 4 wickets for the first time in his ODI career.
In the Sri Lankan chase, Tanvir dismissed Pathum Nissanka early for 5 runs in the second over. Kusal Mendis counter-attacked strongly, reaching his fifty off only 20 balls after coming in at number three.
But Tanvir broke the 69-run partnership by dismissing Nishan Madushka (17), and soon after, he sent back Mendis (56 off 31 balls).
The two left-handers, Kamindu Mendis and Charith Asalanka, faced pressure from spinners Miraz and Shamim. Asalanka fell for 6 to Shamim’s bowling.
Tanvir returned to claim Kamindu (33), and Sri Lanka lost wickets regularly after that.
However, Janith Liyanage kept Sri Lanka in the hunt with valuable innings of 22 and 42, forging a 58-run ninth-wicket stand with Dushmantha Chameera, who contributed only 12 runs.
Liyanage’s resistance ended at 78 runs when he caught a return catch off Mustafizur in the 48th over.
The series-deciding third ODI will be played on Tuesday in Pallekele.
