Kundai Matigimu has acknowledged his mistake and accepted responsibility.
Right after the incident, suspicions arose, and they were confirmed. Zimbabwe pacer Kundai Matigimu was fined for breaching the code of conduct during the second Test against South Africa.
The ICC announced on Tuesday that Matigimu has been fined 15% of his match fee and received one demerit point.
The incident took place on the first day of the second Test in Bulawayo last Sunday. In the 72nd over of the visitors’ innings, batsman Lwandrei Pretorius played a shot off Matigimu, who then threw the ball aggressively towards the stumps during his follow-through, hitting Pretorius on the wrist.
Matigimu violated a Level 1 offense of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits “throwing the ball or any cricketing object dangerously or inappropriately at a nearby player during an international match.”
Being a Test debutant, Matigimu accepted his fault and the penalty, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
Zimbabwe currently faces the prospect of losing the Test by an innings within three days. After replying to South Africa’s 626 for 5 with a mere 170 all out in their first innings, they ended day two of the follow-on at 51 for 1.
