India has now gone over six months without winning a toss.
From Suryakumar Yadav to Rohit Sharma and now Shubman Gill, Indian captains have been consistently unlucky when it comes to tosses. Losing the toss again in their latest match, the team has set an unwanted record.
On Thursday, at the Lord’s Test against England, Shubman Gill lost the toss. This marks the third consecutive Test in this five-match series where India’s new Test captain has been on the losing side of the toss.
Across all three formats, India has now lost the toss in 13 consecutive matches. No other men’s international cricket team has faced such a prolonged streak.
Previously, West Indies held the record by losing 12 consecutive tosses between February 2 and April 21, 1999. India surpassed that after losing the toss at Edgbaston against England, effectively ending the West Indies’ unfortunate record.
India’s current streak began on January 31 in Pune during a T20 match against England. India won the toss in the first three matches of that five-match series but lost it in the final two under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.
Rohit Sharma then lost the toss in all three matches of the subsequent ODI series against England. Despite winning five consecutive matches in the Champions Trophy and lifting the trophy, Rohit lost the toss in every game he captained.
During this run, India set a new record for the most consecutive toss losses in ODIs (15), surpassing the Netherlands’ previous mark of 11. Rohit also tied Brian Lara’s record for most consecutive toss losses as captain in ODIs, with 12.
Since the 2023 World Cup semi-final, India has not won a toss in ODIs. Apart from Rohit’s 12 matches, the other three matches had Lokesh Rahul as captain.
Combining ODIs and T20s, India entered the England Test series having lost the toss in 10 straight games. With losses in the toss in the first three Tests, India added another unwanted record to their tally.
