Shakib Al Hasan had a day to forget in the second match of the Global Super League.
Just 24 hours after delivering a stellar all-round performance, Shakib experienced the other side of the coin. The veteran cricketer failed in both departments this time—getting out for a low score and finishing wicketless with the ball.
In Friday’s match held in Guyana, the 38-year-old all-rounder managed only 7 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed. With the ball, he bowled 4 overs, conceding 34 runs without taking a single wicket—a complete contrast to his previous outing.
In fact, this continues a worrying trend for Shakib. In his last 10 T20 appearances, he has failed to reach double digits in 6 innings (excluding one match where he didn’t bat). With the ball, he has gone wicketless in 7 of those 10 games.
It was a tough outing overall for his side, Dubai Capitals, who couldn’t defend a modest target. Hobart Hurricanes chased down the 142-run goal with ease, losing only 3 wickets and finishing the job with 18 balls to spare.
After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Dubai quickly collapsed to 3 wickets inside the Powerplay. Shakib walked in to bat during the sixth over but struggled to get going—scoring just 1 run from his first 7 deliveries.
He briefly hinted at breaking free by slog-sweeping Mohammad Nabi for a six, but the joy was short-lived. “One ball later, he misread a slower delivery and was caught in the gap between long-off and mid-off,” ending his brief stay at the crease.
Gulbadin Naib was Dubai’s top scorer with 31 runs, and as expected, the total remained below par.
Hobart’s spin duo—Mohammad Nabi and Fabian Allen—took 3 wickets each. Observing their success, Dubai skipper Gulbadin Naib also began with spin from both ends in the second innings.
But both Shakib and Rohan Mustafa failed to deliver. In his first over, Shakib was hit for two boundaries by Ben McDermott. The Hobart opener struck two more in his next over. Shakib’s first spell cost 20 runs in just 2 overs.
He returned in the 8th over, conceding 5 runs including one boundary. Naib brought him back late in the game, where he gave away 9 more runs with another four.
Ben McDermott’s explosive 48 off 24 balls and Macalister Wright’s steady 50 off 47 deliveries secured an easy win for Hobart.
With one win and one loss from two games, Dubai Capitals now sit third on the points table. They will face Guyana Amazon Warriors next, early Monday morning Bangladesh time.
