For the first time since the last T20 World Cup, the left-handed batter has been recalled to New Zealand’s T20 squad.
What turned out to be unfortunate for Finn Allen has brought good fortune for Devon Conway. The left-hander has been called up to New Zealand’s T20 squad after more than a year, thanks to his teammate’s injury.
Initially, Conway was not included in the squad for the upcoming tri-nation series featuring South Africa and Zimbabwe. However, after Allen picked up a foot injury while playing in Major League Cricket (MLC), the door opened for Conway’s return. Now, at 34, he has the chance to once again represent his country in T20s—something he hasn’t done since the last World Cup.
Conway has remained active in franchise cricket. Representing the Texas Super Kings in the MLC, he scored 135 runs in four matches at a strike rate of 127.35. In total, he has played 208 recognized T20 matches, scoring 6,591 runs, including two centuries and 52 half-centuries.
For New Zealand, Conway has featured in 50 T20Is, amassing 1,408 runs at a strike rate of 127.76.
New Zealand have also added three more players to the tri-series squad: batters Mitchell Hay and Tim Robinson, along with all-rounder James Neesham. They will serve as cover for Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra, who are set to play in the MLC final on Sunday.
The tri-nation series will be held in Zimbabwe, where New Zealand play their opening match on Wednesday against South Africa. Each team will face the others twice, with the top two teams meeting in the final on July 26. All matches will be played at Harare Sports Club.
