India’s Test captain has scaled a new peak, surpassing a 23-year-old record.
“He needed just one run to equal Rahul Dravid’s tally and two to go past it. Shubman Gill got there with a two, driving Brydon Carse through the off side to climb to the top.”
Until now, the record for most runs by an Indian in a Test series in England belonged to Rahul Dravid, who scored 602 runs in four Tests in 2002 — a symbol of elegance and consistency.
Gill began the Lord’s Test — the third of the current series — 17 runs short of Dravid’s mark. After scoring just 16 in the first innings, the 25-year-old Indian captain etched his name into the record books on Sunday with his performance in the second innings.
“He couldn’t stay at the crease much longer though, falling for 6 off 9 balls.”
In his debut series as captain, Gill has now scored 607 runs across three Tests at an incredible average of 101.16, including three centuries, one of which was a double hundred.
He has already set a few milestones in the first two Tests of the series — and with two more matches still to go, there are likely more records waiting to be rewritten by him.
