West Indies’ Hayley Matthews has now claimed the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for the fourth time in her career.
Meanwhile, Aiden Markram — the Player of the Final in the Test Championship — has added another feather to his cap. His match-winning century at Lord’s against Australia earned him the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June.
The ICC announced the names of the June award winners on Monday. Matthews bagged the honor in the women’s category, while Markram took the men’s title.
In the men’s race, Markram edged out his teammate Kagiso Rabada and Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka. Matthews, on the other hand, beat compatriot Afy Fletcher and South Africa’s Tazmin Brits.
This is Matthews’ fourth Player of the Month award, having previously won it in November 2021, October 2023, and April 2024. She becomes only the second cricketer — after Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner — to win it four times.
Markram only played the Test Championship Final in June. After getting dismissed for a duck in the first innings, he bounced back with a heroic 136 off 207 balls in the run chase. His innings guided South Africa to a memorable five-wicket victory while chasing 282, sealing their first ICC trophy in 27 years — since the 1998 Champions Trophy.
Markram also contributed with the ball, picking up a wicket in each innings of the final.
Matthews, meanwhile, starred with both bat and ball in the white-ball series against South Africa. She scored 104 runs and took 4 wickets in the three-match ODI series, though West Indies lost it 2-1.
But Matthews made up for it in the T20I series, playing a pivotal role in West Indies’ triumph. She scored 147 runs at a strike rate of 120.49 with two half-centuries and also took 2 wickets, earning the Player of the Series award.
