England have called up left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson for the fourth Test against India.
An injury to a teammate has opened the door for Dawson’s Test comeback. England have added the left-arm spinning all-rounder to their squad for the fourth Test against India.
On the third day of the Lord’s Test, Shoaib Bashir injured the little finger of his left hand, ruling him out of the remaining two matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With their first-choice spinner sidelined, England turned to Dawson.
Dawson last played a Test in July 2017 against South Africa — the third of his career. Although out of the national side since, he’s been a consistent performer for Hampshire in domestic cricket. In fact, he was named PCA Domestic Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024.
In first-class cricket, Dawson has played 212 matches, taken 371 wickets, and scored 10,731 runs at an average of 35.29, including 18 centuries.
Dawson debuted for England in all three formats in 2016 but never cemented a regular spot. So far, he has played six ODIs and 14 T20Is for England.
He last played an ODI in November 2022 against Australia. Just last month, after nearly three years away, he returned to England’s T20 side, taking five wickets in three matches against the West Indies — finishing as the joint top wicket-taker of the series.
Pace duo Sam Cook and Jamie Overton have been left out of the squad for the fourth Test.
England, leading the series 2-1 after a thrilling 22-run win at Lord’s, will play the fourth Test at Old Trafford starting July 23.
