After being bowled out for just 27 runs and losing the series 3-0, Cricket West Indies’ president believes both players and fans will face several “sleepless nights.”
Following the 3-0 Test series defeat at home to Australia, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has called an emergency meeting. The Caribbean legends Clive Lloyd, Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara have been invited to join the discussions.
They will be joined by three other former players — Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw — as part of the “Cricket Strategy and Operating Committee” to review the team’s “very disappointing” recent performances.
West Indies lost all three Tests to Australia within three days. The most humiliating was the final Test in Jamaica, where chasing 204 runs, the team was bundled out for just 27 runs in 14.3 overs. This is the lowest total in 70 years and the second-lowest score in 148 years of Test cricket history. In 1955, New Zealand was all out for 26 runs against England in Auckland.
Seven West Indies batsmen were dismissed without scoring — a record for the highest number of ducks by a team in a single Test innings. The team’s first six batsmen combined to score only 6 runs, also a world record. Several other embarrassing records were set.
Dr. Kishore Shallow, president of Cricket West Indies, said in a statement on Tuesday that the entire West Indies cricket community will endure many “sleepless nights” after such a painful defeat. At the same time, he urged everyone to be patient during the rebuilding phase.
“Like every West Indies cricket fan, I have felt the pain of our recent Test defeats to Australia. Many of us will have sleepless nights, including the players who share the same pain… We are in a rebuilding phase, investing in the next generation and reviving the spirit that once made West Indies cricket a powerhouse on the world stage.”
Shallow added that the meeting with Lara, Richards, and Lloyd is informal, but they will be actively involved in the “next phase of cricket development” for West Indies.
After the Test series, West Indies will play a five-match T20 series against Australia. Next month, they will host Pakistan for a limited-overs series at home.
