The Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed Abu-Naga has passed away at the age of 36. The footballer, popularly known as ‘Bonga,’ was battling severe liver issues.
The Egyptian Football Association expressed their condolences on social media Saturday after announcing his death.
He was recently hospitalized due to gastrointestinal and liver problems, where he was diagnosed with jaundice. Although his condition stabilized for a brief period, he was transferred to intensive care on Friday, where he passed away on Saturday.
Last season, Abu-Naga played a key role in helping his club, Wadi Degla, return to Egypt’s top league after four years. He appeared in 29 matches for the team during the season.
In February, Egypt’s coach Wael Riyad had called him up to the national team for the African Nations Championship qualifiers.
