India’s T20 captain has returned to batting practice after surgery.
Suryakumar Yadav had been dealing with a recurring injury for some time, but now he has begun his cricketing preparations again following sports hernia surgery. The goal is to be fully fit ahead of the Asia Cup.
He has started batting practice at the Centre of Excellence (National Academy) in Bengaluru and remains under the close supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) medical staff. His workload will gradually be increased as he progresses.
Suryakumar underwent surgery in June in Munich, Germany. Initially, the plan was for him to recover in time for India’s Bangladesh tour this month, but that series has been postponed until next year. Now, his focus is firmly on the Asia Cup.
The tournament begins on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates. India’s first match will be against the UAE in Dubai the very next day.
The 34-year-old batsman last played in June at the Mumbai T20 league. His most recent appearance in recognized cricket was on June 1 during the IPL’s second qualifier match. Ahead of the Asia Cup, he may also feature in some practice matches at the Centre of Excellence as part of his batting preparations.
