Michael Clarke was left in awe as India drew the Test series in England by winning two matches without Jasprit Bumrah, and he showered praise on the rest of India’s bowlers.

The former Australia captain was particularly impressed with India’s bowling attack and the way they fought back to level the series after trailing early on. For Clarke, the fact that they won two Tests without the man he considers “the world’s best bowler” made their achievement even more remarkable.

In the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Bumrah played three Tests. He claimed five wickets in the first innings of the opening Test at Headingley, missed the next game for rest, and then returned at Lord’s to take another five in the first innings and two in the second.

However, he struggled in the Old Trafford Test, conceding over 100 runs for the first time in his career and picking up just two wickets.

Ironically, India lost both matches in which Bumrah bowled well. In another game he played, the batters fought hard to secure a draw and keep the series alive.

Notably, Bumrah was absent for both of India’s victories. Although it was already decided before the series that the injury-prone pacer would only play three matches, his selective appearances have sparked criticism. Some have even raised the surprising question of whether India’s bowling attack is better without him.

Clarke, however, dismissed such suggestions outright. According to him, every team in the world would always want Bumrah. Still, speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, he was full of admiration for India’s other bowlers.

“Winning the last match in such dramatic fashion and coming from behind to level the series… wow, incredible. Absolutely outstanding. And another thing worth mentioning — in the two Test matches India won, the world’s best bowler, Bumrah, didn’t play. They won both without him. The other Indian bowlers deserve a lot of credit for stepping up.”

“Of course, I believe — and I don’t think anyone would disagree — that any team would be stronger with Bumrah. But to win two Tests without him, that bowling attack deserves huge praise.”

After losing the first Test, India bounced back at Edgbaston thanks largely to Akash Deep, who took 10 wickets on debut in England. In the final Test, Prasidh Krishna played a key role in the thrilling win with four wickets in each innings.

And then there was Mohammed Siraj — arguably the hero of the series. The only Indian bowler to feature in all five Tests, Siraj bowled more overs than anyone from either side and finished with a series-high 23 wickets. With a blend of skill and fierce determination, he led the attack and ensured Bumrah’s absence wasn’t felt.

In Clarke’s view, the responsibility brought out the best in him.

“Krishna, Siraj… fantastic. I think whenever Bumrah doesn’t play, Siraj’s mindset is, ‘I have to make something happen.’ When the team is under pressure, he wants the ball in his hand. The greater the expectation and pressure, the better he becomes. He really enjoys that role in the team.”
