India’s former head coach sees a regal aura in the country’s new Test captain.
Ravi Shastri has been left deeply impressed by Shubman Gill—not just for his spectacular batting on the England tour but also for the leadership qualities he displayed. The ex-coach believes Gill has a long career ahead in international cricket and will only grow into an even better batsman with time.
Gill began his journey as India’s Test captain with the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Under his leadership, India fought back twice from behind to draw the five-match series 2-2.
Along with his sharp captaincy, Gill led from the front with the bat. Runs flowed from his willow as he piled up records one after another. With four centuries, he finished as the series’ top scorer with 754 runs—no other player even crossed 500.
In doing so, Gill surpassed Australian legend Sir Don Bradman’s record for the most centuries by a touring captain in a Test series in England. He narrowly missed breaking Bradman’s long-standing tally of 810 runs in a single series.
Such performances have won Shastri’s admiration. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former allrounder showered praise on the young right-hander.
“He will play for a long time because we’ve seen the kind of series he’s had here in England. He’s only 25, and by expressing himself this way, he will grow into an even better batsman.”
“He’s in the right place, and he will stay in the right frame of mind. He is composed, he carries a regal aura… the way he bats is so effortless, and he has the ability to play big innings.”
