Dewald Brevis, who lit up the T20 series with the bat, could make his ODI debut against Australia.
Ahead of the ODI series, South Africa made changes to their squad. They have included young pacer Kwena Maphaka, who impressed in the T20s.
Initially picked only for the T20s, Maphaka was outstanding with the ball, finishing the three-match series as the leading wicket-taker with nine scalps at just 17 years old.
So far, he has played two ODIs for the Proteas, picking up five wickets at an average of 24.40. His debut came last December against Pakistan in Cape Town, where he claimed 4 wickets for 72 runs.
Maphaka’s List A experience is limited, having played only four matches and taken eight wickets.
While South Africa lost the T20 series 2-1 to Australia, Brevis stole the show with the bat. He smashed a record-breaking century followed by a destructive fifty, finishing with 180 runs—the most in the series.
The 22-year-old explosive batter has already caught the eye of ODI captain Temba Bavuma, who hinted that Brevis could feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what he (Brevis) can do in ODI cricket,” said Bavuma.
In List A cricket, Brevis has played 22 matches, scoring 1,065 runs at a strike rate of 112.10, with three centuries and five fifties to his name. He now awaits his first international ODI cap.
The ODI series begins Tuesday in Cairns, followed by games on Friday and Sunday.
