Umpires have raised doubts about Prenelan Subrayen’s bowling action.
The joy of making his ODI debut hasn’t fully sunk in yet, but the South African off-spinner has already been hit with disappointing news — his bowling action has come under scrutiny.
Subrayen made his ODI debut on Tuesday in Cairns during the first match of the series against Australia. During the game, on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Sam Nogajski expressed suspicion about his action.
Despite South Africa’s 98-run win, Subrayen bowled his full quota of 10 overs, conceding 46 runs and taking one wicket. His only dismissal came when Travis Head was stumped while stepping out to attack him.
The 31-year-old made his Test debut just last month in Bulawayo, where he picked up four wickets in the first innings.
Having a bowling action “reported” doesn’t mean an immediate suspension. Subrayen must now undergo testing at an ICC-approved lab within 14 days. He can continue bowling until the results arrive. If he passes the assessment, there will be no issues, but if he fails, he’ll face a ban from bowling until he corrects his action and clears another test.
South Africa are already missing Kagiso Rabada, their pace spearhead, who was ruled out before the ODI series due to injury. After losing the T20I series 2-1, the Proteas began the three-match ODI series on a positive note with this opening win.
The second ODI will be played on Friday.
