New Zealand cricket has been hit hard by a wave of injuries, with Will O’Rourke ruled out for an extended period alongside Glenn Phillips and Finn Allen, while there’s growing uncertainty over Mitchell Santner’s availability as well.
What started as a dream run for O’Rourke has suddenly turned into a nightmare. Since making his international debut, the 24-year-old pacer quickly became an integral part of the New Zealand setup. But now, his journey has been derailed by a bowler’s familiar enemy — injury. He has suffered a stress fracture in the lower back, forcing him out of action for at least three months, with the recovery period possibly stretching even longer depending on his progress.
The injury was first felt during the opening Test against Zimbabwe, where O’Rourke experienced stiffness in his back. Scans back home confirmed the stress fracture. After a three-month strength and conditioning program, his return date will be reassessed. He has already been ruled out of the upcoming limited-overs series against Australia, England, and West Indies, and his participation in the December Test series against the Caribbean side also looks doubtful.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed both concern and optimism about O’Rourke’s recovery:
“At the moment, our thoughts are with Will, and we’re wishing him a speedy recovery. He’s had such a fantastic start to his international career, and an injury like this is naturally very disappointing. But he’s a determined young man and committed to coming back stronger.”
“We’re hopeful he’ll recover within three months. Stress fractures are, unfortunately, part of fast bowling, but when they happen, it’s never ideal. We’ll review his condition after the initial recovery phase and hopefully have him back on the field.”
O’Rourke made a sensational Test debut against South Africa in February 2023, taking 9 wickets. So far, he has 39 wickets in 11 Tests, 22 wickets in 17 ODIs, and 7 wickets in 7 T20Is.
Unfortunately, O’Rourke isn’t the only setback for New Zealand. Glenn Phillips, who missed the Zimbabwe tour due to a groin injury, will remain sidelined and is set to miss the upcoming T20I series against Australia in early October. The all-rounder sustained the injury while playing in Major League Cricket last month and hasn’t recovered in time.
Fellow power-hitter Finn Allen has also been ruled out for at least three months after undergoing surgery on his right foot. The 26-year-old opener, famous for his record-breaking six-hitting exploits, mainly focuses on T20 cricket and had previously opted out of New Zealand’s central contract to prioritize franchise leagues.
Adding to the growing injury list, Mitchell Santner’s availability for the T20I series against Australia is uncertain. The New Zealand white-ball skipper returned from The Hundred with abdominal pain and may require surgery. New Zealand Cricket has stated that every effort will be made to get him fit in time.
Amid all the injury concerns, there’s one positive update — pacer Ben Sears has recovered from his injury and is back to full fitness.
