Finally, Indian cricket fans got to hear Shreyas Iyer’s own reaction to one of the most talked-about topics in recent times.
Despite a stellar IPL season, Shreyas Iyer was left out of India’s Asia Cup squad, sparking widespread discussion and debate. Former coaches and cricketers alike questioned the selectors’ decision. At last, the batter himself has spoken. His voice carries both a hint of disappointment and a determination to keep doing his job.
In the IPL that ended last June, Shreyas led Punjab Kings to the final with impressive leadership and exceptional batting. He scored 604 runs in 17 matches, finishing as the team’s top scorer and sixth overall in the tournament. His batting average was 50.33 with a strike rate of 175.07.
Yet, when India announced the 15-member squad for the T20 Asia Cup last month, Shreyas was not included—not even in the reserve list of five players. The 30-year-old cricketer was left out entirely.
During the squad announcement, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that “there is currently no place for Shreyas in the team.” The decision sent shockwaves through Indian cricket, leaving many former players surprised.
In an interview published Sunday on the ‘IQOO India’ YouTube channel, Shreyas spoke about his feelings, expressing both disappointment and continued support for the team.
He said, “It’s only disappointing when you know you deserve a place in the team, in the playing XI. That’s when it hurts. But at the same time, when you see someone performing consistently and giving their best for the team, you must support them. Ultimately, the main goal is the team’s victory. When the team wins, everyone is happy.”
“Even if you don’t get the opportunity, you must ensure that you are doing your work honestly. It’s not about only performing when someone is watching. You must continue doing your work even when no one is looking.”
Shreyas last played T20 for India in December 2023. Since February 2024, he hasn’t had a chance in Test cricket, though he remains a regular member of the ODI squad. He played a key role in India’s recent Champions Trophy victory.
This month, he was appointed captain of the India ‘A’ team for the upcoming series against Australia ‘A’ at home, an announcement made on Saturday.
