Afghanistan are on the brink of a remarkable achievement — a third consecutive ODI series win against Bangladesh. The Afghans triumphed in the 2023 and 2024 ODI series between the two sides, and now lead the current three-match series 1–0.
So, in Abu Dhabi today, Afghanistan will take the field aiming to seal yet another series victory, while Bangladesh’s mission will be clear — to keep the series alive. But what could Bangladesh’s lineup look like for this crucial encounter?
In the opening match of the series, Tanzid Hasan and Saif Hasan opened the innings for Bangladesh. Neither managed a big score — Tanzid made 10, while debutant Saif scored 26. The same pair is expected to open again in the second match.
Although opener Mohammad Naim has rejoined the squad after resolving visa issues, it’s unlikely he’ll be included in the starting XI today. At No. 3, Najmul Hossain Shanto is set to bat again. The left-handed top-order batter was dismissed for just 2 runs in the previous game, so a strong knock from him will be vital for Bangladesh.
The middle order appears fairly settled, with Towhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Zakir Ali likely to feature. Nurul Hasan, who scored 7 runs in the last match, could get another opportunity.
Given Abu Dhabi’s slow wicket, Bangladesh might consider strengthening their spin attack. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain could return to the side, pairing up with Tanvir Islam — a combination that could pose serious trouble for Afghanistan’s batters. In that case, Bangladesh may opt for two pacers instead of three.
Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman is also expected to return after being rested in the first match. Tanzim Hasan Sakib is likely to be the second seamer. However, if Bangladesh decide to go with three pacers instead of Rishad, one of Taskin Ahmed or Hasan Mahmud could come in. Fast bowler Nahid Rana is also in contention. Bangladesh’s pace unit looks in good rhythm overall, with little difference in performance levels among them.
With such depth and balance, Bangladesh have been rotating their pace options for quite some time — and that trend might continue today as well.
Bangladesh’s probable XI
Tanzid Hasan, Saif Hasan, Najmul Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (captain), Towhid Hridoy, Zakir Ali, Nurul Hasan, Tanvir Islam, Rishad Hossain / Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan.
