Shubman Gill struck another century — this time an unbeaten 129 against the West Indies. It was his 10th Test century and his fifth in the last seven Tests. With this feat, Gill became only the second Indian captain after Virat Kohli to score five Test centuries in a single year.
Kohli, however, achieved this milestone twice — in 2017 and 2018 — scoring five centuries as captain in each of those years. While Kohli took 16 innings in 2017 and 24 in 2018 to reach five tons, Gill managed it in just 12 innings, putting him well ahead of his predecessor.
Gill took over India’s Test captaincy during the England tour in June–July earlier this year, where he scored 769 runs with four centuries, including a monumental 269-run knock. Since that tour, Gill has been in sublime form, consistently piling up big scores.
After today’s hundred, Gill’s overall Test average has risen to 43.47, while his average as captain now stands at an impressive 84.81. His 129 not out is the fifth-highest score of his career — his best remains the 269 against England in Birmingham. Interestingly, four of his top five innings have come in the past few months, with the top three all recorded on English soil.
The year 2025 has been outstanding for Gill. In just seven Tests, he has amassed 940 runs at an average of 72 — a phenomenal run of form.
In the Delhi Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal also made a century, scoring 175 before being run out in the morning session of Day 2.
India declared their first innings at 518 for 5, while West Indies reached 41 for 1 in 15 overs at the time of writing this report.
