Namibia made history in their very first T20 match against South Africa.
In a thrilling encounter that went down to the final over, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton smashed a six off Andile Simelane’s first ball when 11 runs were needed. He then collected four more runs in the next three deliveries. With one ball left and two runs required, he drove it through midwicket for four, sealing a stunning win for Namibia. The home crowd erupted in pure joy, celebrating one of the most memorable victories in their cricketing history.
Playing their first-ever T20 against the Proteas, Namibia triumphed by four wickets in Windhoek. They bowled out last year’s T20 World Cup runners-up for just 134 and chased it down off the final delivery.
This marked Namibia’s fourth T20 win against a full ICC member nation — following previous victories over Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka. For South Africa, it was another shocking loss to an associate nation after their 2022 T20 World Cup defeat to the Netherlands.
It was also the first international match held at the Namibia Cricket Ground, and the packed stands were rewarded with a historic win from the home side. Despite South Africa missing a few regular stars, Namibia’s performance was all about grit and determination.
Hero of the chase, Jan Green, scored an unbeaten 30 off 23 balls with a six and two fours. But it was Ruben Trumpelmann who earned the Player of the Match award for his all-round display. He took 3 wickets for 28 runs and later contributed an unbeaten 11 off 8 balls, ensuring his side crossed the finish line.
Batting first, South Africa stumbled early as Quinton de Kock — returning to the national side after June 2024 — was dismissed for just 1 run in the opening over. Trumpelmann struck again to remove Reeza Hendricks soon after, leaving the Proteas at 25 for 2.
Middle-order resistance came briefly from Luan-Dre Pretorius and Rubin Hermann, but regular wickets prevented any big partnership. Jason Smith’s 31 was the top score as Namibia bowled tightly to restrict South Africa to 134 for 8.
Namibia’s reply wasn’t smooth either — they lost both openers for 28 and slipped further in the seventh over. Captain Gerhard Erasmus steadied things with 21 off 17 balls, but when JJ Smit (13) and Malan Kruger (18) fell, the game seemed on edge again.
Then came Green and Trumpelmann’s crucial unbroken partnership. When they came together, Namibia still needed 34 off 21 balls. With composed batting and fearless strokes, they added 37 runs together to take their team home — sealing a famous four-wicket win.
