Litton Das has captained Bangladesh in all three formats, but he has only held the full-time role in T20Is. Under his leadership, Bangladesh has won their last four T20I series and even came close to reaching the Asia Cup final. Overall, the T20 side has performed quite well with Litton at the helm.
A regular member of Bangladesh’s Test squad, Litton’s name has now entered the discussion for the Test captaincy after Najmul Hossain stepped down following the Sri Lanka series last June. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) must appoint a new captain before the upcoming two-match Test series against Ireland next month.
However, Litton revealed that he has not yet been approached by the board about the role. Speaking at a press conference in Chittagong ahead of the T20I series against the West Indies, Litton said, “So far, I don’t know anything about it. If they think I’m the right person, of course, they will talk to me. Let’s see what decision they make.”
In 2023, Litton stepped in as the stand-in captain against Afghanistan when Shakib Al Hasan was injured. Bangladesh went on to win that match by a record margin of 546 runs. Later that year, though his name was considered for the captaincy, the role eventually went to Najmul.
Litton’s recent comments make it clear that he is open to taking on the Test captaincy if given the chance. “When you’re a player, being the captain in Test cricket is a big achievement. I don’t think anyone would say ‘no’. But the board hasn’t said anything yet,” he said.
While the BCB focuses on finding a Test captain, Litton’s immediate challenge remains in T20 cricket. Before next year’s T20 World Cup in February, Bangladesh will play six matches — three each against the West Indies and Ireland.
When asked about his goals for these two series, Litton replied, “To be honest, I want our players to face real challenges in both batting and bowling. The more difficult the situations we face in these six matches, the better. And by difficult, I don’t mean losing matches — I mean facing tough moments. I want our bowlers, for example, to feel pressure when they bowl. These are the things that will help us a lot in the future.”
