The Indian captain, who was hospitalized midway through the Kolkata Test, is now doubtful for the Guwahati Test.
Although the Kolkata Test ended within three days, the Kolkata chapter isn’t fully over yet. Both teams are staying in the city for the moment. India even have a practice session scheduled at Eden Gardens on Tuesday, which was originally supposed to be the Test’s fifth day. But the chances of Shubman Gill being part of that session are extremely slim.
Gill, who was admitted to the hospital during the Test due to a neck issue, has been discharged and returned to the team hotel. However, the uncertainty hasn’t lifted completely. Concerns remain over whether the Indian captain will be able to play the next Test in Guwahati.
The Indian team will fly from Kolkata to Guwahati on Wednesday, but Gill is unlikely to travel with them. Players dealing with neck problems are generally advised to avoid traveling on commercial flights while recovering.
Gill’s absence proved costly for India in the Kolkata Test. On the second day, he faced just three deliveries before leaving the field due to his neck problem. He was later admitted to the hospital.
India never got him back in either innings. Despite taking a 30-run lead after scoring 189 in the first innings, the hosts collapsed in the fourth innings, falling 30 runs short while chasing only 124.
After the match, head coach Gautam Gambhir admitted they deeply felt Gill’s absence in the batting lineup. He could not confirm whether the captain would be available in Guwahati, only saying that Gill’s condition would be monitored and tested at regular intervals.
If Gill is eventually ruled out, Rishabh Pant will lead the team. Sai Sudharsan—whose exclusion in Kolkata stirred a wave of criticism—may come into the XI. Devdutt Padikkal could also be an option.
Gill had missed a Test against New Zealand last October due to a neck issue as well.
