After a brilliant bowling performance from Matt Henry and aggressive batting from Mark Chapman, New Zealand clinched victory in the final ODI.
There was plenty of swing and movement, combined with a barrage of short balls. The West Indies batsmen struggled to respond to New Zealand’s pace attack. Despite a valiant effort with limited resources, the Caribbean side couldn’t trouble the Kiwis, who chased down the target comfortably.
With a 4-wicket win in the final ODI, New Zealand completed a whitewash over West Indies.
At Hamilton on Saturday, the West Indies innings ended at 161 in 36.2 overs, with no batsman managing to reach 40.
Matt Henry picked up four wickets. In his 92-match ODI career, he has taken four wickets on 13 occasions and claimed five wickets three times.
Chasing a modest target, New Zealand’s start wasn’t perfect, but a composed half-century from Mark Chapman sealed the match with almost 20 overs to spare.
The West Indies, batting first after winning the toss, started aggressively. In the third over, Akeem Ogiste struck two sixes off Henry. They scored 30 runs in the first four overs.
Henry responded immediately, claiming two wickets in the next over. He dismissed Ogiste (17) and Kacey Carty (0) within three balls.
Opener John Campbell started well, hitting two fours and a six off Kyle Jamieson in a single over, but Jamieson got his revenge, sending Campbell back for 26.
Former centurion Shai Hope (16) fell to Jack Fox’s leg stump outside off, and Sherfane Rutherford (19) failed to make a significant contribution.
After the pacers’ assault, Mitchell Santner took two wickets, reducing the Caribbean side to 95/7.
Roston Chase fought briefly, scoring 38, while Kharry Pierre remained unbeaten on 22 to guide the team to 160.
New Zealand’s chase didn’t start smoothly either. Matthew Ford and Jordan Sills quickly removed Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Will Young. When experienced Tom Latham was dismissed, the team was 70/4.
Under pressure, Chapman and Michael Bracewell counter-attacked, building a 75-run partnership off 48 balls. Chapman was dismissed for 68 from 63 balls, and Santner fell later. Bracewell remained unbeaten on 40 from 31 balls, guiding the team to victory.
Matt Henry was named Man of the Match for his four-wicket haul, while Kyle Jamieson earned Man of the Series with seven wickets.
Following the T20I and ODI series, the two sides will compete in a two-match Test series, starting in Christchurch on December 2 and Wellington on December 10.
