After recovering from a serious injury and returning to the field after seven long months, Mark Wood has been sidelined again—this time for a long stretch—after playing just one Test.
Injections, rehab, and relentless effort have all ended in disappointment. Wood will take no further part in this Ashes series. His old knee problem has flared up badly once again, ruling the England fast bowler out of the remainder of the series.
Matthew Fisher has been called up as his replacement. The 28-year-old pacer has played only one Test, making his debut against the West Indies in March 2022.
Wood first suffered this left-knee injury during the Champions Trophy in February. He was forced to undergo surgery, and his return to action was repeatedly delayed. Because of his long injury history, England handled him with extra caution. They prepared him carefully with the aim of having him fully fit for the Ashes.
Following that plan, he finally returned in the first Test of the series. It was his first Test in 15 months. The match ended in just two days, and Wood bowled 11 wicketless overs. Afterwards, knee pain forced him to consult specialists again. He was ruled out of the second Test, and even before the squad announcement, he had slim chances of featuring in the third Test in Adelaide.
England hoped he might still be available for the final two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. But now that hope has ended.
Understandably, Wood is extremely disappointed. However, his social-media message also showed determination to return. He also wished the best for an England side trailing 2–0 in the Ashes.
“I am disappointed to be ruled out of the rest of the Ashes. After a major surgery and seven long months of hard work and rehab, I finally returned to Test cricket. But my knee simply couldn’t hold up. None of us expected this. I came here hoping to make a big impact. I am devastated that despite so many injections and intensive treatment, my knee is in worse condition than we thought.”
“I am very sorry that I couldn’t meet expectations. But this isn’t about effort anymore. Whatever happens, I will try my absolute best to come back again. The last few months have been incredibly tough, but I am determined to give it another proper try. I still believe we can fight back. Never give up. Come on, England…”
Wood will now return home to begin another round of rehab. But despite his promise to fight back, the road ahead looks extremely difficult. He turns 36 next month, injuries continue to trouble him, and the workload of a fast bowler is unforgiving. His international future is now under serious doubt.
As for Fisher, he is already in Australia with the England Lions. The 6-foot-2 pacer will join the main squad before the third Test.
