Not just the leadership, but the entire Capitals squad has been completely revamped.
Keshav Maharaj has been appointed captain of Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming SA20 season. Until last season, he was the captain of Durban Super Giants.
Rilee Rossouw had previously led the Capitals, but Maharaj has now taken over the leadership role.
Not just the leadership, but the entire Capitals squad has been completely revamped.
Last September, the franchise entered the auction with the highest budget of around $1.85 million and had the maximum 16 player slots available.
At the same auction, the Capitals broke the SA20 record by spending $945,000 to sign South African batter Dewald Brevis.
It was also at this auction that Maharaj was added to the squad. The team further strengthened their roster with Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams, Craig Overton, Saqib Mahmood, and Cody Yusuf. Recently retired IPL star Andre Russell was signed as a wildcard player.
Before the auction, the Capitals had already secured contracts with Will Jacks and Sherfane Rutherford.
There have been changes in the coaching staff as well. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach, succeeding Jonathan Trott, with former South Africa pacer Shaun Pollock serving as his assistant.
In the inaugural season of South Africa’s franchise league, the Capitals finished top of the group stage but lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final.
They failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last two seasons, finishing fifth each time.
The new SA20 season will begin on December 26 with MI Cape Town facing Super Giants. Pretoria Capitals will start their campaign the following day against Joburg Super Kings.
