England’s Cricket Director, Rob Key, has said that if the reports are true, such behavior is completely unacceptable.
England are already under immense pressure after losing the Ashes in just 11 days, facing severe criticism. Amid this, allegations have surfaced regarding some English players indulging in excessive drinking. Rob Key confirmed that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
After losing in just two days at Brisbane to start the Ashes, England faced defeat on the fourth day. Before the Adelaide Test, they had a long break, spending four nights on the Queensland coast.
Several media outlets, including the BBC, reported that during their stay on the beaches of Noosa, some players engaged in drinking. The reports also suggested that this behavior continued for two days even after the Brisbane defeat.
Although England showed slightly more fight in the third Test against Australia and even created hope during the fifth day, they ultimately lost by 82 runs, ending their Ashes dreams.
Regarding the allegations before the Adelaide Test, Rob Key told BBC Sport that an investigation would take place to verify the facts.
“Sometimes headlines can be misleading, suggesting continuous drinking or similar behavior,” he said.
“There are reports that players have been drinking excessively for six days—if that is true, it is completely unacceptable. We will examine the truth behind any exaggeration or misinformation.”
England had planned their Noosa trip before the tour began. Despite losing the first two Tests, the plan remained unchanged. Although the entire team was present there, Rob Key was at a different part of Queensland.
Images circulated on social media and in the press showing several players drinking at a bar.
Rob Key emphasized the need to investigate what really happened. “When you see pictures of five or six players sitting down to eat, and a couple of them are drinking, it’s important to find out the actual story.”
“And if it was indeed something like a bachelor party where the players indulged excessively, then that is completely unacceptable. I do not support a drinking culture, nor do I like it.”
The Boxing Day Test will begin in Melbourne on Friday, with the fifth and final Test of the series starting in Sydney on January 4.
