The Australian batter, in scintillating form, now faces serious doubt over his World Cup participation.
His chances of playing again in the Big Bash League are all but over, and even the T20 World Cup now hangs in the balance. Will Tim David be fit in time for the global tournament? That is the big question surrounding the in-form Australian batter.
David left the field with a hamstring injury during a Big Bash match on Friday. Playing for Hobart Hurricanes against Perth Scorchers, he all but sealed his team’s victory with a blistering 42 off 28 balls. However, while running between the wickets during that innings, he felt a sharp pull in his hamstring and immediately walked off the field.
This is David’s second hamstring injury of the year. He suffered a similar issue during the last IPL, which ruled him out of the closing stages of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning campaign. On that occasion, he spent nearly two months on the sidelines, and Australia eased him back into action with great caution.
This latest setback comes with less than six weeks remaining before the T20 World Cup. David is now an integral part of Australia’s T20 side. The 29-year-old has been outstanding this year, especially after being promoted from a finisher’s role to the No. 4 or No. 5 position in the batting order.
The extent of the injury and the length of his recovery will become clearer after scans scheduled for Saturday.
Speaking to Channel Seven after the match, David admitted his uncertainty.
“I felt something while taking the second run. It wasn’t ideal. I didn’t want to stay out there and risk making it worse. I trusted the boys to finish the job. I’m waiting for the scans—let’s see what happens…”
Losing David is a massive blow for reigning champions Hobart Hurricanes. Captain Nathan Ellis expressed that concern, while also acknowledging the wider implications for the national team.
“To pretend that some of us aren’t also thinking about the World Cup would be dishonest,” Ellis said. “First and foremost, as a teammate, I’m just devastated that we won’t have him for some Hurricanes matches. Hopefully, he gets everything right, returns towards the end of the tournament if possible, and then is available for the World Cup.”
“There’s no hiding how important he is to the Australian cricket team. He’s batting at No. 4 and dominating. So all we can do is hope it’s nothing too serious.”
This year, David has scored 395 runs in 10 innings for Australia at an average of 49.37 and a strike rate of 197.5. He also registered his maiden T20 century during this period. Across all T20s in 2025, he has amassed 1,203 runs at an average of 39.7 and a strike rate of 172.89.
