Chattogram Royals’ English wicketkeeper Adam Rossington created history by pulling off four stumpings in a single match.
Rossington’s BPL debut was one to forget. He was dismissed for just one run with the bat and had no impact behind the stumps. But in his second match, he delivered a performance he will remember for a lifetime. The Chattogram Royals keeper etched his name into the world record books for stumpings.
In Friday’s BPL match against Dhaka Capitals, Rossington completed four stumpings — the first time any wicketkeeper has achieved this feat in a single BPL game.
With this performance, Rossington joined an elite list of just six wicketkeepers worldwide to have recorded four stumpings in a T20 match. Bangladesh’s Dhiman Ghosh is also on that list, having achieved the milestone in a National League T20 match.
Rossington’s record-breaking run began with the dismissal of Usman Khan. Showing lightning reflexes, he whipped the bails off to stump the Pakistani batter off Tanvir Islam’s left-arm spin.
Next came Shamim Hossain. After blasting a devastating 81-run knock the previous day, Shamim managed only 4 runs from 7 balls this time, falling to Sheikh Mehedi Hasan. Once again, Rossington was razor-sharp in removing the bails.
Rossington then struck twice more in consecutive overs, stumping Sabbir Rahman and Imad Wasim. The bowlers were Mehedi Hasan and Tanvir Islam respectively.
At one stage, Rossington was within touching distance of becoming the first wicketkeeper to record five stumpings in a single match. However, no further opportunities came his way.
The first instance of four stumpings in a T20 match dates back to 2004, when Warwickshire wicketkeeper Tony Frost achieved the feat against Glamorgan in England’s T20 Cup.
Later, India’s Dinesh Karthik (2007), Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal (2009), Bangladesh’s Dhiman Ghosh (2010), West Indies’ Denesh Ramdin (2014), and Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Dawatage (last year) all added their names to this rare list.
Dhiman’s four stumpings came while representing Sylhet Division against Khulna Division in the National League.
In international T20 cricket, only two wicketkeepers have managed four stumpings in a match — Kamran Akmal against the Netherlands in the 2009 World Cup and Denesh Ramdin against Pakistan in the 2014 World Cup.
Before Rossington’s heroics, the BPL had seen only two instances of three stumpings in a match. Both occurred in the 2016 season — Mohammad Shahzad did it for Rangpur Riders against Barisal Bulls, while Umar Akmal achieved the feat for Rajshahi Kings against Rangpur Riders.
