Concerns have arisen over the participation of South Africa’s experienced batsman in the T20 World Cup.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup, South Africa has faced a string of injuries to key players, and now David Miller has been added to that list. Worries have emerged about whether the veteran batsman will be able to feature in the global tournament.
Miller sustained an injury while fielding against the Joburg Super Kings in the SA T20 League on Monday. It is believed that the Pearl Royals captain has injured his groin.
He left the field during the 16th over while fielding, immediately raising concerns. Those fears grew further when he did not bat in the chase.
Pearl Royals lost the match by 44 runs, but Miller’s team had already secured a spot in the tournament playoffs. They are set to play the Eliminator match against Joburg on Thursday.
Miller’s chances of featuring in the remainder of the tournament appear slim. After Monday’s match, he was unable to give any clear update on his injury but admitted to feeling discomfort.
In addition to Miller, two other South African T20 World Cup squad members are battling injuries. All-rounder Donovan Ferreira suffered a serious shoulder injury while fielding in the SA T20 League and has been ruled out of the tournament.
Earlier, in December, Tony de Zorzi sustained a hamstring injury and is also in the process of recovery.
The defending runners-up South Africa will begin their World Cup campaign against Canada on February 9 in Ahmedabad. Their other group ‘D’ opponents are Afghanistan, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates.
