Despite a deeply disappointing season, Australia’s explosive batter has secured a new contract—and Glenn Maxwell is set to keep entertaining Big Bash crowds even beyond the age of 39.
Of Maxwell’s 14 Big Bash seasons, the most recent was easily his poorest. Still, interest in him never faded. Sydney Sixers had already prepared an attractive offer, while his current side, Melbourne Stars, were equally determined to retain him. In the end, the experienced all-rounder chose to stay put, committing his future to the club he has come to represent.
As soon as the Big Bash season ended, Maxwell signed a new two-year deal with Melbourne Stars, ensuring the aggressive star will remain a key figure in the tournament despite his advancing age.
This season, Maxwell scored just 76 runs from eight innings, with 39 of those coming in a single knock. It was the lowest return of his Big Bash career. His previous worst season came in 2016–17, when he managed 117 runs from four matches.
However, Maxwell’s legacy cannot be defined by one poor campaign. He is the third-highest run-scorer in Big Bash history, with 3,317 runs at a strike rate of 154.35. He remains the only player to score a 150-plus innings in the tournament, has struck the second-most sixes with 153, claimed 47 wickets, and taken several of the most spectacular catches the league has seen.
Beyond his on-field impact, Maxwell’s star value and crowd-pulling appeal continue to make him a sought-after player.
After playing for Melbourne Renegades in the 2011–12 season, Maxwell has spent the following 13 seasons with Melbourne Stars, becoming the face of the franchise. Yet success has continued to elude both player and club. The Stars are the only team in Big Bash history yet to win a title, and once again they are placing their faith in Maxwell to finally break that drought.
Maxwell himself remains desperate to lift the trophy.
“Melbourne Stars have been a huge part of my cricket career, and I genuinely want to bring success to this club from the bottom of my heart. I feel this squad is on the path to becoming something special, and I’m confident that over the next two seasons we’ll be in a strong position to challenge for the title.”
