Croatia Fight Back to Secure Quarter-Final Spot Against Portugal
The 2018 World Cup runners-up, Croatia, turned the tables on Portugal in the UEFA Nations League, recovering from a first-half deficit to secure a crucial 1-1 draw and advance to the quarter-finals. Despite being outplayed in the first half, Croatia delivered a dominant second-half performance to achieve their target.
On Monday night, in the final group-stage match on home soil, Croatia overcame an early João Félix goal to level through Manchester City defender Joško Gvardiol. The result ensured Croatia finished as runners-up in Group 1 of League A with 8 points from six matches, while Portugal topped the group with 14 points.
The draw was a relief for Zlatko Dalić’s side, who had struggled throughout the campaign. Croatia ended the group stage without a win in their last three matches, including a loss to Scotland just three days prior. Yet, their resilience in this match saw them narrowly avoid elimination and progress to the next stage.

Croatia nearly equalized five minutes later, but Andrej Kramarić’s shot hit the post, leaving the hosts trailing at halftime.
Second-Half Comeback
The second half saw a reinvigorated Croatia take control. Their efforts paid off in the 65th minute when Gvardiol latched onto a cross near the byline and scored from a tight angle, leveling the match.
Portugal almost regained the lead in the 73rd minute, but Nuno Mendes’ shot was brilliantly saved by the Croatian goalkeeper. Croatia then created three clear chances in quick succession, but Portuguese goalkeeper José Sá denied Luka Sučić, Ante Budimir, and Kramarić with impressive saves.
In stoppage time, Croatia came agonizingly close to snatching the winner, but Budimir’s header struck the post, forcing both teams to share the points.

While Portugal comfortably topped the group, Croatia’s draw was enough to secure second place and a quarter-final spot. Scotland, despite a 2-1 win over Poland in the other group match, fell short of qualification and will now face relegation playoffs. Poland, finishing last with 4 points, were relegated to League B.
