Brentford 1 – 3 Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal closed the gap with Liverpool to six points in the Premier League table after a convincing 3-1 win over Brentford.

Despite a lackluster start, Arsenal found their rhythm and delivered a strong performance, reclaiming the second spot in the league standings.

The match, played at Brentford’s home ground on Wednesday night, saw Arsenal begin the new year with a confident victory.

Match Summary
Arsenal fell behind early as Bryan Mbeumo found the net in the 13th minute. Receiving a pass from Mikkel Damsgaard, Mbeumo skillfully entered the box, avoided a defender, and sent the ball into the net at the near post.

Though Arsenal dominated possession early on, their attacking play lacked sharpness. A defensive lapse in the 28th minute almost cost them another goal, but Spanish goalkeeper David Raya managed a goal-line clearance.

Just a minute later, Arsenal struck back. Thomas Partey’s long-range shot was initially saved by Brentford’s keeper, but Gabriel Jesus pounced on the rebound and scored with a header, leveling the game.

The Brazilian forward has been in superb form, netting six goals in his last four matches across all competitions.

Arsenal took full control in the second half with two quick goals in three minutes. In the 50th minute, Brentford failed to clear a corner, and Mikel Merino capitalized by slotting the ball into the net amidst the chaos. Then, in the 53rd minute, Gabriel Martinelli extended the lead to 3-1 with a precise strike from just outside the six-yard box.

Although Arsenal maintained pressure for the remainder of the match, they couldn’t trouble Brentford’s goalkeeper much in the closing stages.

League Table Update
With this victory, Arsenal now have 39 points from 19 matches, with 11 wins and six draws. They trail league leaders Liverpool, who have 45 points from 18 matches.

Brentford, on the other hand, remain 12th in the table with 24 points from 19 games.

Arsenal’s dominant start to the new year signals their intent to keep up the pressure on Liverpool in the title race.
