Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s coach who led the team to victory in the 2024 UEFA Euro, has extended his contract for another two years.

The Spanish coach will remain in charge of the national team until the 2028 European Championship. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Monday that de la Fuente’s contract has been extended beyond its previous expiration date of the 2026 World Cup.

De la Fuente took over from Luis Enrique after Spain’s exit in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. Prior to his role with the senior team, he managed Spain’s U-21 team, leading them to a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Under de la Fuente’s leadership, Spain has undergone a transformation. In the 2022-23 season, they won the UEFA Nations League title, and this summer, they were crowned undefeated champions at the Euro 2024 in Germany.

De la Fuente has not only secured silverware but also revamped Spain’s playing style. While the team was traditionally known for their possession-based “tiki-taka” approach, they now play at a faster tempo, becoming sharper in attack and more dynamic on the field.

In the Nations League, Spain will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals next March.
