Nico González Thrilled to Join Manchester City, Honored by Guardiola’s Interest

In their bid to escape a rough patch, Manchester City went all out in the January transfer window, signing multiple players. As the window drew to a close, they secured the signature of Nico González, a midfielder who once rose through Barcelona’s famed academy before making his mark in senior football.

The 23-year-old Spaniard had been a key player for FC Porto, having signed a five-year deal just 18 months ago. His performances were impressive, and he was becoming a vital part of the team. But when a call came from Manchester City, it was impossible to turn down. The prospect of playing under Pep Guardiola was simply too exciting for him.

City had been in talks with Porto for several days, as reported by ESPN. Financial disagreements initially delayed the deal, as Porto was unwilling to compromise—especially since Barcelona was set to receive a portion of the transfer fee. In the end, City met Porto’s demands, sealing the move for around €60 million.

González himself was eager to make the switch, and his excitement was evident in his reaction:

“At this stage of my career, this is the perfect opportunity for me. I’m 23, and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club for that than Manchester City.”

“Just look at their squad—it’s incredible, filled with world-class players. Any footballer in the world would want to be part of this team.”

Another key reason for his move was the chance to work under Guardiola, a manager he deeply admires.

“I know Guardiola’s reputation, and I can’t wait to work with him. To have him want me in his team—it’s an honor.”

“I’m really excited. Now, I just want to meet my new teammates, get to know the staff, and play in front of the City fans.”

City’s aggressive recruitment in January saw them bring in four new players, spending over €210 million—more than the combined total of the Premier League’s 19 other clubs. With their squad now bolstered, they’ll be aiming to bounce back strongly for the rest of the season.
