Manchester City’s Brazilian winger Savinho is confident about beating Europe’s most successful club to secure a place in the next stage of the Champions League.

City’s performances on the pitch have been far from their usual standard, and now they face a tough test. To make it to the Champions League Round of 16, they must overcome Real Madrid. However, the English club is not afraid of the challenge.

Ahead of their clash with Europe’s most decorated club, City’s Brazilian winger Savinho expressed confidence, stating that the team is mentally prepared for the battle.

Both teams had underwhelming performances in the revamped Champions League group stage. Pep Guardiola’s City was on the verge of elimination but managed to scrape through, finishing 22nd in the table to reach the playoffs. Meanwhile, defending champions Real Madrid placed 11th.

To secure a spot in the knockout rounds, City and Real must battle it out in a two-legged playoff. City will host the first leg on Tuesday, while the return leg will take place at Madrid’s home ground on February 19.

In recent years, the rivalry between City and Real has reached new heights. Despite City’s struggles this season, their fans expect them to rise to the occasion on the big stage, setting the stage for another high-voltage showdown.

Speaking to ESPN, Savinho shared his excitement about the upcoming clash, stating that these are the games players dream of.

“I joined Manchester City to play in matches like these, and every great player wants to be part of such games. It’s not just me; many experienced players in this dressing room feel the same way.”

“These are battles for top-tier players and coaches. They’re thrilling to watch and even more exciting to play in. Hopefully, City will secure victories in both legs.”

This marks the fourth consecutive Champions League season in which City will face Real Madrid in the knockout rounds—five times in five years.

Savinho also revealed that the squad remained composed when the playoff draw pitted them against Real Madrid.

“The dressing room was calm during the draw. We’re used to this by now, having played against them so often in recent seasons. The battles are always intense.”

“We stayed composed because, ultimately, we had no other choice. We don’t get to pick our opponents—we just prepare and wait for the match.”
