Man City to face Plymouth in FA Cup Fifth Round after shocking win over Liverpool

Plymouth Argyle have earned a blockbuster FA Cup fifth-round tie against Manchester City after a stunning 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

What Happened?
Plymouth pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 1-0. The Devon-based team now faces Premier League giants Manchester City in the fifth round. In other matchups, defending champions Manchester United will meet Fulham, while Newcastle United will play against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The FA Cup is known for its “giant-killing” moments, where teams from all tiers of English football have a shot at glory, adding to the magic of the competition.

The fifth-round FA Cup matches will take place between February 28 and March 3.

  • Third Round: Winner £115,000, Loser £25,000
  • Fourth Round: Winner £120,000, No prize for the loser
  • Fifth Round: Winner £225,000, No prize for the loser
  • Quarter-Finals: Winner £450,000, No prize for the loser
  • Semi-Finals: Winner £1,000,000, Loser £500,000
  • Final: Winner £2,000,000, Loser £1,000,000

Teams can earn significant prize money, especially lower-league teams who make deep runs in the competition. A team entering in the first round that wins the FA Cup can pocket up to £4,030,000, with £2,000,000 awarded to the winners of the final.

Who Won the FA Cup Last Year?
Manchester United are the defending FA Cup champions, having won the 2023-24 edition by defeating Manchester City 2-1 in front of 85,000 fans at Wembley. Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored the goals for United, with Jeremy Doku’s late strike not enough to prevent the Red Devils from lifting the trophy. United’s route to the final included wins over Wigan Athletic, Newport County, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Coventry City.
