Liverpool 2 – 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Arne Slot’s team is back to winning ways after holding off pressure from the visitors in the second half.

After dropping points in the dying moments of their previous match, Liverpool once again lost some control in the second half and even conceded a goal. However, they managed to hold their ground for the remainder of the match, overcoming Wolverhampton Wanderers’ challenge to secure the victory.

Playing at Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool claimed a 2-1 win in their Premier League clash. Luis Díaz opened the scoring, followed by a goal from Mohamed Salah to double the lead. Matheus Cunha pulled one back for Wolves in the second half.

Liverpool had also beaten Wolves by the same scoreline in their first league encounter this season, back in September.

With Arsenal winning their match on Saturday and closing the gap at the top, Liverpool needed a response—and they delivered. This win restored their previous lead, taking them to 60 points from 25 matches with 18 wins and 6 draws. Mikel Arteta’s side sits second with 53 points.

Liverpool took an early lead in the 15th minute in somewhat unexpected fashion. Salah’s cross from the left found Díaz inside the box. The Egyptian couldn’t deliver a clean pass, but the ball deflected off defender Joe Gomez and landed back at Díaz’s feet. The Colombian attempted to control it with his chest, but the ball rolled into the net instead.

In the 35th minute, Díaz had another big chance. He shrugged off a defender before rushing into the box but hurried his shot wide upon seeing the goalkeeper charge forward. Moments later, the keeper made contact with Díaz, and the referee awarded a penalty despite protests from Wolves players. After a VAR review, the decision stood.

Salah made no mistake from the spot, confidently converting his 23rd goal of the season. He now leads the scoring charts, with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland trailing him by four goals. Salah’s tally for Liverpool this season stands at 16 goals.

Wolves had a golden chance early in the second half when Marcel Munetesi found himself one-on-one with Alisson, but the Liverpool keeper reacted quickly to deny him.

In the 57th minute, Diogo Jota went down in the box after a sliding challenge from Wolves defender Emanuel. The referee pointed to the spot, but a VAR review overturned the decision, showing there was no contact.

The visitors started pushing forward and finally found a breakthrough in the 67th minute. Brazilian forward Cunha received a pass, skillfully dodged a defender, and struck a brilliant curling shot past Alisson into the far post.

Wolves dominated possession in the closing stages and created a few promising chances, but they couldn’t avoid their 16th defeat of the season. They remain in 17th place with 19 points, just two points above the relegation zone.
