Aston Villa 2 – 2 Liverpool

Liverpool dropped points again, making it two winless games in their last three league matches.

Despite taking the lead first, Liverpool couldn’t hold on. Instead, Aston Villa struck twice in quick succession. Arne Slot’s side managed to fight back but couldn’t find a winner.

Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at Villa Park ended in a 2-2 draw.

Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead, but goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins turned the game around for the hosts. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s second-half strike ensured Liverpool came away with at least a point.

This result means Liverpool have won just one of their last three league matches. After a 2-2 draw at Everton, they secured a 2-1 victory at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers before this draw.

Liverpool remain at the top of the table with 61 points from 26 matches, having won 18 and drawn 7. They are now 8 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, though Mikel Arteta’s team has a game in hand.

Liverpool started the game aggressively, taking seven shots in the opening 30 minutes. The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Diogo Jota set up Salah, who slotted home with his left foot. The Egyptian had also scored in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Villa in November.

This marked Salah’s 24th goal of the league season, putting him five behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.

Villa responded quickly, equalizing just nine minutes later. After Tyrone Mings’ shot went wide, Tielemans found the net with a left-footed strike in the 38th minute.

Just before halftime, the hosts took the lead. Lucas Digne delivered a perfect cross, which Watkins converted with a well-placed header.

Liverpool found their equalizer in the 61st minute, albeit with a bit of luck. Salah laid off a pass to Alexander-Arnold, whose powerful shot took a deflection, looping over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Despite creating several chances in the closing stages, Liverpool couldn’t find the winner.

Aston Villa now sit ninth in the table with 39 points from 26 matches.
