Atlético Madrid’s coach believes that had they been more clinical in front of goal, the game could have unfolded differently.

After conceding in the fourth minute against Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid responded strongly and even took control for a period. However, they failed to capitalize on their chances during that spell. Coach Diego Simeone thinks that had they been more effective in front of goal, the match could have had a different outcome.

Atlético suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. At the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday, Rodrygo put the hosts ahead before Julián Álvarez equalized. In the second half, Brahim Díaz restored Real’s lead, and Simeone’s team couldn’t find another response.

Despite the early setback, the Argentine coach was pleased with his team’s reaction. He remains optimistic about turning things around in the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano next Wednesday, similar to what they achieved against Inter Milan last season.

“When the game was in our control, we should have made better use of our opportunities.”

“Taking risks is difficult because any counterattack could cost you the match. We managed the situation very well, but we lacked something in those final few meters.”

Fortunately for Atlético, Real Madrid missed chances to extend their lead late in the game, keeping the deficit at just one goal. Simeone remains hopeful that playing at home will provide the boost his team needs to overturn the result in the return leg.
