Good news for Argentina ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers! Cristian Romero, the World Cup-winning defender, is set to return to action for Tottenham Hotspur after three months on the sidelines due to a thigh injury.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury on December 8 in Tottenham’s 4-3 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League. Since then, he hasn’t played a single match.

Romero traveled with the team to the Netherlands for Tottenham’s Europa League Round of 16 first-leg match against AZ Alkmaar, where he was expected to make his return alongside fellow defender Micky van de Ven. However, both players remained on the bench as Spurs suffered a 1-0 defeat.

Explaining the decision not to play them, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said on Friday that both defenders will return in Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.

“I had almost made up my mind the night before after looking at the pitch. It wasn’t in good condition, and I didn’t want to take any risks. It wasn’t the right match for them to come back. But now, with two extra days of training, I’m hopeful that both will be ready for Bournemouth,” Postecoglou said.

Romero’s return comes at the perfect time for Argentina, who will play Uruguay away on March 22 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, followed by a home clash against Brazil four days later. The defending world champions have already included Romero in their preliminary squad for these crucial matches.

Argentina currently leads the standings with 25 points from 12 matches, followed by Uruguay with 20 points. Brazil sits in fifth place with 18 points.
