Despite making a return to the national team after 17 months, Neymar’s wait to play international football has been extended once again. The Brazilian star has been sidelined due to injury before even stepping onto the field. He revealed that the decision to withdraw was made collectively to avoid unnecessary risks.

Last Thursday, Brazil coach Dorival Júnior announced the squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina. Neymar was included in the squad, marking his long-awaited return.

The 33-year-old had been out of action for over a year since suffering a knee injury during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023. After a frustrating stint at Saudi club Al Hilal, he returned to his boyhood club, Santos, in the January transfer window. Slowly regaining his rhythm, Neymar contributed three goals and three assists in seven matches for Santos.

However, he was absent from Santos’ squad in last Monday’s Paulista Championship semi-final against Corinthians. Initially, there was uncertainty about his condition, but it was later confirmed that he was struggling with a muscle injury. As a result, Brazil announced his withdrawal from the squad on Friday.

Taking to Instagram, Neymar shared his disappointment and explained the situation behind his withdrawal:

“I was so close to making my comeback to international football. But unfortunately, I won’t be able to wear the jersey that carries the most responsibility this time. We’ve had many discussions, and everyone knows how eager I am to return. However, we agreed not to take any risks so that I can fully recover and prepare better.”

He also thanked his fans for their support:

“Thank you to everyone who sent me messages of support. This is all part of the process.”
