Midfielder Mohammad Hridoy revealed that Hamza Chowdhury, despite his high-profile background, has quickly become an integral part of the Bangladesh football team. Known for his humble and down-to-earth nature, Hamza has earned the respect and affection of his teammates in a short period.

“He’s responsible, humble, and respectful towards everyone,” Hridoy shared. National team assistant coach Hasan Al Mamun echoed similar sentiments, using the same words to describe how Hamza carries himself both on and off the pitch.

As Bangladesh prepares to face India in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers in Shillong, Hamza stands out as the most high-profile player on the team. Currently playing for Sheffield United in the English Championship and having previously featured for Premier League side Leicester City, where he also lifted the FA Cup, Hamza’s achievements and experience are unmatched in the squad.

Initially, players like Hridoy and Mitul had slight concerns about how well they would bond with such a distinguished footballer. However, Hamza quickly put those doubts to rest.

Hamza’s humble nature isn’t new — it just wasn’t in the spotlight before. He runs a madrasa for orphaned children in his ancestral village in Habiganj. Since joining the Bangladesh national team, stories of him helping the needy, fulfilling fans’ wishes, and supporting the less fortunate have come to light. According to Hridoy, Hamza remains the same humble individual at the training camp.

“If I had to rate him, I’d give him 100 out of 100,” Hridoy said. “There’s a huge difference between his level and ours — everyone knows that. Yet, we have so much to learn from him. His humility is something we’re really enjoying as we try to adapt.”

Assistant coach Hasan Al Mamun also highlighted Hamza’s sense of responsibility and how he naturally fits in with the team.

“Hamza has blended well with the team,” Mamun said. “He has a strong sense of responsibility towards the country and the team. From day one, he has been enthusiastic with the coaching staff and teammates, respecting everyone and engaging in conversations.”

Hridoy added that adapting to Hamza’s style has been easy because of his willingness to help. The midfielder feels confident about battling alongside Hamza in the midfield against India.

“Hamza bhai plays at a very high level, and we’re all trying to adjust and learn from him,” Hridoy shared. “We’re constantly having positive conversations about how to perform better on the pitch and achieve good results.”

“We keep asking him what would work best, what is ideal for us. Since we play in the same midfield position, we’re having very positive interactions,” Hridoy added.
