Former Juventus player Igor Tudor has been appointed as the new head coach.

Juventus coach Thiago Motta has been sacked following two consecutive heavy defeats in Serie A. The club announced that former player Igor Tudor will take over as the new head coach.

In their most recent Serie A match last week, Juventus suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Fiorentina. Before that, they endured a 4-0 thrashing at home against Atalanta.

The Turin-based club confirmed in a statement on Sunday that 42-year-old Motta had been relieved of his duties, with Tudor appointed as his replacement.

Croatian defender Tudor spent the majority of his playing career at Juventus. In August 2020, he served as the club’s assistant coach for one season.

After guiding Bologna to the Champions League last season, Juventus handed Motta a three-year contract in June. However, he failed to live up to expectations in his new role.

This season, Juventus finished 20th in the revamped Champions League. Last month, they were knocked out of Europe’s elite competition after losing to PSV Eindhoven in the playoffs. Less than a week later, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup after a defeat to Empoli.

Juventus remained unbeaten in their first 21 Serie A matches this season, although 13 of those ended in draws. Their unbeaten run came to an end in January with a loss to Napoli. They bounced back with five consecutive wins but back-to-back defeats ultimately cost Motta his job.

With 52 points from 29 matches, Juventus currently sits fifth in the league table, trailing leaders Inter Milan by 14 points.
